Solar Observation Camp at Viharamaha Devi Balika Vidyalaya A Journey into Astronomy
On the bright morning, under the vast blue sky, students and astronomy enthusiasts gathered at VIharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya for a great opportunity to observe the star at the center of the solar system, live force of earth.
Since humans first learned to use telescopes to look into the sky, the ability to see our solar system and the distant stars has been both amazing and humbling. Telescopes have helped us discover the universe’s wonders, bringing distant worlds closer to us.
A Solar Observation camp was done on 11th of July at Viharamaha devi Balika Vidyalaya and they had a chance to safely view and experience the sun Surface and sun spots through telescopes. Students from the Viharamaha Devi Balika in Kiribathgoda were able to share the wonder of solar dynamics and its impact on our planet together with members of the Astronomical Society of University of Colombo.
The day began with an informative lecture on solar dynamics, where we explained the life cycle of stars and the effects of solar activity on our planet. During the lecture, we set up telescopes, each equipped with special filters to ensure safe observation of the sun. Participants eagerly took turns observing sunspots, which appeared as dark and bright spots on the sun’s surface. This hands-on experience allowed students to apply what they had learned and see the sun’s features up close.
Many students actively engaged in the lecture, listening attentively and asking thoughtful questions about the solar system and the Sun, demonstrating their eagerness to learn more. The enthusiasm was evident throughout the camp, with many describing it as their first close experience with solar phenomena.
The solar observation camp was a highly successful and enriching experience. It provided students with a unique opportunity to directly observe the sun and learn about its complex dynamics. The enthusiasm and curiosity displayed by the participants highlighted the event’s impact, making it a memorable day for everyone involved. This hands-on approach not only deepened their understanding of solar phenomena but also sparked a greater interest in astronomy. We look forward to more such engaging events in the future.
