Star Quest

The Astronomical Society of University of Colombo has proven to be the oldest Astronomical Society in Sri Lanka, which conducted a vast number of successful projects all over the country during the past years. Among these projects, “Star Quest” is one of the major projects that is organized by combining all the schools in Sri Lanka.
“Star Quest” is an all-island inter-school astronomical quiz competition which is held annually at the university premises. It was started in 2007 and is the very first All Island Inter-School Astronomical Quiz Competition ever held in Sri Lanka.
Schools from all around the country are invited. Out of 50 teams, the best four advance to the semifinals and the best two compete in the final. Students from any grade can participate. The top four places are awarded with medals and certificates.
The purpose of this project is to select the inter-school quiz team with the best astronomical knowledge and to enhance the interest in astronomy among school students.

About the Quiz Competition
1. Preliminary Round
- The paper consists of MCQs and essay questions.
- The questions are in five categories (General Astronomy and History, Observational Astronomy, Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Space Exploration).
- Questions are given in both Sinhala and English languages.
2. Semifinal Round
- The top four teams are selected from the preliminary round.
- The paper consists of MCQs, structured essay questions, and essay questions.
- The best two teams proceed to the final round, and 3rd and 4th places are decided based on the results of the semifinal round.
3. Final Round
- This is an oral face-to-face questioning round.
- Consists of 3 rounds.
Awards
- The winner is awarded the Star Quest’25 Challenge Trophy, Medals, Certificates and Prizes.
- The 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up are also awarded Medals, Certificates and Prizes.
- All the other participants are awarded participation certificates.
- A special Uprising Trophy will be awarded to one of the teams that didn’t qualify for the semi-finals, based on a separate round held for them.
Rules and Regulations
- Only one team can represent a school.
- Each team should consist of four members. Only the students who are currently studying in school (who have not attempted A/L) are permitted to represent the team and take part in the competition.
- All the participants should be present at the University of Colombo, Faculty of Science before 8.15 a.m. on 23rd of August 2025.
- Scientific calculators are allowed to be used for calculation purposes. Participating teams should bring those.
Registration
- You should register online through the google form and confirm your participation on or before 16th of August 2025.
- You should upload the certified registration form in pdf format when you are filling in the google form.
- You should hand over a hard copy of the registration form on the day of the event. <<Download Registration Form>>
- Any team which fails to confirm their participation on or before the aforementioned date will NOT BE ALLOWED to participate in the competition.
